Art of Documentary Cinema

Department of Design and Applied Arts | School of Cinema, Photography, and Audiovisual

Alessandra Brancati

This two-year program is dedicated to documentary filmmaking.

Through a pragmatic approach, it will provide all the knowledge necessary to make a documentary film. This two-year program stems from the need to provide technical and theoretical tools that enable students to capture and preserve Sardinia’s vast cultural heritage, represented by its significant architectural, archaeological, landscape, and demographic, ethno-anthropological assets. It will explore the possibilities and challenges of documentary filmmaking.

During the course, all students will create their own short documentary film under the constant guidance of their instructors, who will strive to highlight each student’s skills, unique talents, and interests, bringing to life as many perspectives on reality as there are participants.

The main teaching principles of this course are: the reversal of the relationship between theory and practice, collaboration and continuous dialogue with professionals in the sector (a rapidly developing sector in Sardinia), and the practical learning of the methods and techniques for directing and editing a documentary film.

The teaching method begins with theoretical discussions, then addresses technical and production aspects. Students will be encouraged to engage with practical aspects, refining their own perspectives while learning the techniques of documentary storytelling.

The training activities within the experimental two-year second-level program will take the form of lectures, workshops, seminars, educational visits, conferences, internships, and placements.
